A table as an instrument – soundtables are what I call found and self-built tables with which I have been improvising sounds, noise textures and rhythms since 2005. Initially playing with cutlery, brushes and other household items, I then switched more to surfaces, cones and hemispheres made of Styrofoam. For the concert on the opening evening of the exhibition project „what knows white…?“ February 22, 2026 in the Künstlerhaus Bergedorf – Hamburg I built a table out of Styrofoam, from which I also elicited white noise using a cello bow, a friction drum and objects made of cardboard, metal and wood. Before that, I researched the new sounds and appropriate playing techniques for the new album. The 6th track is a concert recording from February 22nd, 2026. The other recordings were taken before that

New sounds, accents, structures can become clear and push for new articulations and playing techniques - with tongue, lips, palate, etc. Perhaps it will become clear, the recordings are arranged chronologically, the first track is the oldest recording. • 18 tracks

In the performance I used the previously recorded field recordings of various places in and around Hamburg, found according to a concept around the word Murphy, a record player with toasts that fell on the plates. And the digital possibilities of a laptop in 2006, through which the recordings were processed in space. There are frequent pauses in this recording of the performance, a rare case in electronic concerts and one of the reasons why 16 years later it was important to release this recording of a unique performance.
"If something can go wrong, it will go wrong ((U+C+I) x (10-S))/20 x A x 1/(1-sin(F/ 10)) - that is Murphy's law, and that is how the American Air Force engineer Edward Aloysius Murphy formulated it in 1949. Certainty of action is an illusion in the mad complexity of life. Why do inanimate objects behave the way they do? >>> Murphys website

dec52 • one, two, three, four mixes
EMN: Christoph Funabashi: 12 string acoustic guitar, fx, Kris Kuldkepp: double bass, Felix Mayer: trombone, Heiner Metzger: bass clarinet
DEC52’ offers a new version for the Earl Brown’s famous graphical score December 1952. The concept is driven by the current situation, of not being able to rehearse properly with the ensemble ... more info about the 4 mixes: When we started the dec52 records, we decided that each of us will interprete the score in different direction, so, we had four directions in the space of the dec52 notation - but then the mix with only one direction?? I was curious hearing the four tracks together. It worked and my goal when Mixing was to balance the fourvoices with all the free spaces in between.

Study 1 of the Long While
The study 1 of the long while is a concept piece composed for an ensemble of two clarinet musicians minimum. One sheet with 44 notes between a' flat and the d'' and four bars rest. The score should be read in one direction and then turned and played without a gap. Each player has to start and continue in an individual tempo and not adapt the tempo of one other player. After the two sheets of the score read in both directions only read the score without playing the notes in the same tempo as before, then start again playing the score in the both directions. Thereafter stop playing and stay until the last of the musicians finished - the piece is over. For this recording i played 10 different tracks, 4 with alto clarinet and 6 with clarinet.

The ad hoc trio Simon Camatta, Gunnar Lettow and Heiner Metzger. Recorded at the Frequenzgänge #44 concert / 5.09.2014 / Linker Laden Hamburg / Germany.
Gunnar invited me to the trio set with Simon Camatta and himself - he is organizer too. We played after the solo set of SImon and fortunately the set was recorded by Gunnar. Simon Camatta used drums and percussion with special objects, while Gunnar Lettow takes his electric bass with preparations, electronic and objects, Heiner Metzger performed with styropor objects, bow and the soundtable.

Birgit Ulher: trumpet, radio, mutes, speaker, objects
Heiner Metzger: soundtable, objects • info, press: info • picture
Birgit Ulher and Heiner Metzger play together in various formations since 25 years. The first time they played together in this instrumental constellation was 2005 on the occasion of the exhibtion 'Vom Tisch zur Tafel' by Judith Haman. Over the years they played concerts together with local and international musicians, often at Blinzelbar - where Heiner's concert series ‚h7-Club' took place – and other venues. In the meantime they have developed a very specific, abstract, electroacoustic soundspace. On the soundtable objects of the every day life like wire whisk, brushes, cutlery and glases are moved, bowed, picked and rubbed. Amplified by piezo pick-ups the sounds get an unusual presence, soundtextures and details become cleary audible. These sounds interact, contrast and mix with a differentiated grammar of trumpetsounds, occasionally extended by radiosounds, which are projected into the trumpet using a speaker as mute. The result are complex, partly reductionist soundlandscapes, changing between layered and percussive passages. The duo released their first CD 'blinzeln' in December 2008 on the portuguese label Creative Sources.

Alt Sax: Heiner Metzger, Bar. Sax: Anne Wiemann, Bass: Bernd v. Ostrowsk, Drums: Björn Lücker, Electric Piano, Synthesizer [Moog]: Klemens Kaatz, Guitar: Christian Ribas; Sampler: Guy Saldanha, Tenor Sax: Karsten Glinski, Trumpet, Trombone: Hermann Süß.
Recorded 2001, Hamburg, Germany
The tunes played by the A3XX-bigband are based on samples that Christian Ribas recorded from musicians of the bigband. The compositions and arrangements relate to loops of these samples. Incidental noises created while playing instruments are put in the foreground and layered into grooves. A musician triggers and processes the loops live.
